Energy healing is loved by many and doubted by others. At InnerCamp we believe you deserve an honest picture. Here is what research does and does not show.
What is energy healing?
Energy healing is a broad term for practices such as Reiki, qigong, pranic healing and energy activation. They share an idea found in many traditions: life force, called prana, qi or ki, flows through the body and can be balanced.
What studies show
- A best-evidence review of "biofield therapies" (Jain & Mills, International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 2010) found encouraging evidence for reducing pain intensity and anxiety in some groups, and noted that more high-quality studies are needed.
- A review of Reiki research (McManus, 2017) reported that Reiki performed better than placebo in several trials for relaxation, pain and anxiety.
- Qigong and tai chi, which combine movement, breath and focus, have a large body of research on stress, balance and wellbeing.
Where the evidence is limited
Many studies are small, and it is hard to design a true placebo for a hands-on practice. Science has not measured a "life force" directly. Honest facilitators don't promise cures, and energy healing should never replace medical care.
The nervous system link
What we can measure is how the body responds. Deep relaxation, focused attention, caring presence and slow breathing all shift the nervous system towards rest and repair. That is why the Holosomatic® approach to energy work begins with breath and the body.
How to experience it for yourself
The best way to understand energy work is to feel it, with a trained and trauma-informed facilitator. Read more on our breathing science page or explore the Holosomatic® Energy Facilitator Training.
